ISP Advice?

Hey Pittsburgh folks — what ISP do you use? Do you like it?

I’m currently a Telerama customer, and I’m getting kinda cranky about it. I think it’s time to switch to a more stable provider, but I’m not sure who to go with.

I’m looking for an ISP that’ll give me at least one static IP address and the ability to run a small server (web, mail, etc., etc.).

I’d also like one with off-hours service — while I can deal with the fact that Telerama charges more than Verizon for DSL, I really don’t like the fact that if my network melts down on a Sunday evening I’m basically screwed until Monday morning.

Any thoughts?

I was with Telerama for years, too. But after moving out to Churchill and just having horrible problems with the DSL, I decided to try switching to cable. I haven’t looked back. Easily double the speed I had with DSL for a little less per month. We’ve got Adelphia out there, and the cable TV prices are really outrageous, but the cable modem charges aren’t too bad. I’m not sure what might be available in your area, but I’d definitely suggest trying a cable option for a bit if you can.

p.s. your comments text box is still sizing to the full window width (and underlapping your right side bar) whenever I type. But if I resize the window, then it resizes correctly until I type again…

Unfortunately, cable generally won’t give me static-ip/server stuff, and I’ll get hideously overcharged since I’m not a Comcast cable customer — unfortunately our cable company is crappier than yours.

    Thanks for the suggestion, though.

(And I dunno what to say about the window width issue — which browser on what platform? I can fiddle with it a bit, but honestly it looks normal on Mozilla and Safari. The CSS WordPress uses is a little weird, though, so maybe that’s the problem.)

Hi Nat - Laura’s friend Emmy.

J and I have Salsgiver - out of town local, but they’re SO wonderful. I’ve had them since about 1996 in one way or another. They’re not TOTALLY all hours, but they answer email and phone mail promptly.

If you decide to check them out, let me know cause I can get free month, but honestly, that’s not why I’m recc’ing them. :)
